What we do

Studio Maurice Shapero is an architecture and interior design practice based in Manchester and the North West, with projects in London. We work across a wide range of building types, from sensitive heritage refurbishments to contemporary fit-outs, extensions and new build, bringing together clear design thinking, technical rigour and a practical understanding of delivery.

Architecture and interior design
We provide architectural and interior design services for new build, refurbishment, extension and re-use projects. Our work spans residential, commercial and public-facing buildings, often involving complex constraints and the need to balance character, performance and cost.

Heritage and listed building refurbishment
We have experience working with historic fabric and within designated heritage contexts, including listed buildings and conservation areas. We aim to retain and enhance the qualities that make a place special while adapting buildings for modern use.

Typical work includes:
  • Refurbishment and repair strategies for historic buildings
  • Alterations, extensions and sensitive upgrades
  • Coordination of heritage considerations within the wider design
  • Materials selection and detailing appropriate to historic contexts

Adaptive reuse
We enjoy projects that give existing buildings a new life. Adaptive reuse can reduce embodied carbon, preserve local character and create distinctive spaces.

Typical work includes:
  • Feasibility studies and options appraisals
  • Replanning and reconfiguration for new uses
  • Designing interventions that sit comfortably within the existing fabric

Residential work
From targeted renovations to major extensions, we design homes that improve layout, daylight and everyday functionality, with an emphasis on buildable detail and long-term comfort.

Typical work includes:
  • Extensions and internal reconfiguration
  • Loft and upper-floor additions
  • Kitchen–dining transformations and improved connections to gardens
  • Whole-house refurbishment and interior design

Commercial, cultural and public projects
We have worked on a variety of non-residential building types, including commercial offices, restaurants, art galleries, visitor centres and healthcare environments. These projects often demand strong spatial clarity, robust detailing and careful attention to user experience.

Sustainable design and non-toxic materials
We aim to design responsibly, considering whole-life impact and healthy indoor environments. Where appropriate, we prioritise sustainable strategies and non-toxic materials to support comfort and wellbeing.
