A Brief History Of Maurice Shapero

Education & Early Career
Maurice earned his Master of Arts (MA) from the Royal College of Art and a first-class bachelor’s degree from the Glasgow School of Art, where he won numerous awards for his theoretical work and drawing. After his education, for many years he designed and oversaw the construction of high-profile, award-winning projects while working for Sir David Chipperfield, Michael Wilford CBE, and Stephen Hodder MBE.

Founding the Studio
In 2003 he established his studio in the Northern Quarter of Manchester City centre with a clear intention: to develop and explore a personal philosophy of architecture. To build.

Publications & Recognition
The practice tends to attract creative clients who have a strong desire to build something exceptional. Maurice's work is published globally by magazines such as The Architect's Journal, Dezeen and Building Design. 

In 2012 42nd Street Young Persons Centre won Manchester Society of Architects Building of the Year, Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of The Year and Best Innovative Design at the Northern Design Awards. Palmiro Restaurant was short listed for the Architects Journal Small Projects Award and was exhibited at the RIBA in London. Maurice has collaborated on many architecture competition entries with Sir David Adjaye. In 2007 they won a competition for a new art gallery and residential complex in North Manchester.

Maurice has appeared in and written many pieces for the Architects Journal. His work has been published in three books about architecture - New Work, New Workspace by Ruth Slavid, Twenty First Century Architecture in Manchester by the Modernist Society and Transformations by Urban Splash.

Teaching
Maurice has been involved in architectural education since the mid 90’s. He has lectured and taught at the Architectural Association and the Bartlett School of Architecture and the University of Westminster. Holding part time lecturer positions at Manchester School of Architecture, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Salford, Leeds Beckett University and the University of Bolton. He was External Examiner at Nottingham Trent University for five years.

Art
Maurice has always drawn, painted and made sculpture. In 2019 his sculptures were exhibited at Bury Art Museum curated by Tony Trehy.
Maurice and Tony subsequently collaborated on a book of drawings and poetry. Tony is also writing a novel for which Maurice has designed a fictional art gallery.

Media
Maurice has appeared in a few television programs for Channel 4 and Granada TV with Kevin McCloud, George Clarke, Damion Burrows and Paul Crone.
